Tajweed is the science of reciting the Qur'an as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The word Tajweed comes from the Arabic root j-w-d, meaning "to make well" or "to improve."
At Minhaajulhudaa, we begin Tajweed instruction from the Tamheedy level, teaching children the correct pronunciation of Arabic letters (Makharij) and the basic rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween.
By the Ibtidaiyah level, students learn the rules of Madd (elongation), Ghunnah (nasalization), and the categories of Tafkheem and Tarqeeq. In Idadiyah and Thanawiyyah, students study advanced Tajweed including the rules of Waqf (stopping) and the different Qira'at (recitations).
Our Tajweed teachers hold Ijazah in the Hafs recitation, and we are working toward offering instruction in the other canonical recitations as well.
